Valinor / IRC Glossary / hostmask

hostmask

hostmask
Your hostmask is how most bots and some services identify you on IRC. Unlike your nick, you can change only certain parts of your hostmask. An example of a hostmask is: user@slip-30.mci.net. Most channel bans use some form of your hostmask to identify you, and bots also use it to provide you with channel operator status in your channel. Most services identify you by nickname, however, which is safer and more reliable.
