- a free Unix-like operating system; it's moderately good for running servers, although freebsd, netbsd and openbsd are better. Solaris 2 is best if you have multiple processors in the same computer. Because Linux is free, there is a lot of software available for it; see http://www.freshmeat.net/ for some recent free software, and http://www.linux.org for more information on Linux.
